  5.     "I am not a fundamentalist," declared Prime Minister Mian
  6. Nawaz Sharif last week, but that did not stop him from introducing
  7. broad legislation to make strict Islamic law, or Shari`a, the
  8. "supreme law of Pakistan." Addressing a joint session of
  9. Pakistan's Senate and National Assembly, Nawaz Sharif outlined
  10. a legislative package that includes changes in the education and
  11. judicial systems and the restructuring of the economy along
  12. Islamic lines. The proposed legislation fulfills Nawaz Sharif's
  13. election promise to the small but powerful Islamic parties that
  14. helped him defeat Benazir Bhutto last October.

  16.     Fundamentalist groups have reacted with cautious approval,
  17. but opponents of the bill, including educated women and
  18. lawyers, charge that it would pave the way for a militant and
  19. repressive Muslim theocracy, confine women to their homes and
  20. bring the media and the educational system under the control of
  21. Islamic clerics. The worst-case interpretation of Shari`a also
  22. favors the banning of music, dance and cinema, and the mandatory
  23. wearing of veils by women in public.
